Definitions of Giftedness
"In California, public schools may apply for educational funds to assist in providing appropriate learning opportunities for those students identified as gifted and talented. A basic gifted program may include: testing to identify gifted students; grouping students within a class or for all or part of the school day by ability; providing curriculum that is challenging and allows continuous progress; developing social and emotional skills; training for teachers and administrators in the education of gifted learners; providing counseling and support for gifted students who are at-risk; and involving parents in the planning and evaluation of GATE programs.."

In a letter sent to all parents of GATE students at the beginning of the year, the Yuba City Unified School District informed them that there would be no funding for after school enrichment programs for GATE.
The California Association for the Gifted (CAG) notes on their web site that funding for these programs from the state has been significantly decreased, which means local districts will not be receiving nearly as much as use to be available. You can click the link shown in the upper right hand corner of this page to go to CAG's web site.
District officials have indicated that YCUSD will still test all third graders for GATE this year (which is an expensive proposition in and of itself) but no other activities are planned.
Stay in touch with this web site for information throughout the year regard GATE programs.
